Aranya Art Center

Aranya Art Center is an independently operated contemporary art institution under the Aranya Group. It is dedicated to fostering connections between art and local communities through exhibitions, research, and public programs. Since its establishment in 2019, Aranya Art Center has maintained an ongoing engagement with contemporary art practices in a global context, collaborating with artists, curators, and cultural institutions both in China and internationally to present projects of academic rigor and public resonance.

Grounded in site-specificity, the institution’s practice responds to the artistic landscape, cultural history, geographical environment, and social realities of each venue’s locale. These distinct local contexts serve as concrete points of departure for reflection, encouraging sustained exploration of modes of cultural production with greater critical depth, sustainability, and contemporary relevance. The institution currently comprises Aranya Art Center (Main Site), Aranya Art Center North, and Aranya Art Center Guangzhou, forming a cross-regional network that expands the possibilities of contemporary art institutions through a strategic North-South presence in China.

Aranya Art Center (Main Site)

Established in 2019 within the Aranya · Qinhuangdao community in Hebei Province, China, Aranya Art Center is the inaugural venue of Aranya Art Center’s constellation of sites. Designed by Neri&Hu Design and Research Office, the architecture is defined by its solid massing and textured concrete façade, evoking the presence of a monolithic rock. Inside, a spiral staircase connects the Atrium at the base with the exhibition galleries above, forming a continuous spatial sequence. With a sustained focus on the art history, geography, and cultural fabric of its surrounding region, Aranya Art Center presents the diverse practices of international and Chinese contemporary art while building tangible connections between art and local culture.

Aranya Art Center North

Established in 2024, Aranya Art Center North is located in Aranya · Qinhuangdao (North Coast) community in Hebei Province, China. The architecture is jointly designed by Japanese architect Kazunari Sakamoto (Kazunari Sakamoto Architectural Laboratory) and Chinese architect Liu Yichun (Atelier Deshaus). With a total area exceeding 5,000 square meters, the building consists of a nearly 2,000-square-meter indoor plaza surrounded by six box-like galleries. As a hub for exhibitions and cultural activities within the community, Aranya Art Center North introduces diverse global artistic practices while continuously fostering the understanding of and engagement with contemporary art across broader social contexts and audiences.

Aranya Art Center Guangzhou

Established in 2025 within the CTG · Aranya · Jiulonghu community, Aranya Art Center Guangzhou marks the institution’s inaugural urban branch. Designed by Dong Gong (Vector Architects), the architecture threads four exhibition halls and an open-air pavilion through two rows of mature native banyan trees, adopting a cluster-style layout that responds to the climate and natural landscape of the Lingnan region. As a geographical and cultural extension of the institution, Aranya Art Center Guangzhou is deeply rooted in the vibrant and open cultural soil of the Pearl River Delta. While engaging with the local cultural fabric and urban context, it strives to serve as a cultural platform that bridges Lingnan perspectives with international contemporary art.
